A brief history of Hutchinson Lodge
Hutchinson Lodge is within walking distance of Donner Pass Road (old highway 40), near Donner Summit in
the town of Norden and next door to the Sierra Club's Clair Tappaan Lodge.
The format at Hutchinson is do-it-yourself for everything from getting the
wood stove going to cleaning up at the end of your stay. It is well suited to groups of relatively inexperienced winter, spring, summer and fall visitors who enjoy rustic accommodations and a community atmosphere. Hutchinson Lodge was given to the Club in 1956.
- Location: Just west of Clair Tappaan Lodge.
- Capacity: 20
- Facilities: One large room, two sleeping lofts, kitchen, two wood stoves,
sauna and two indoor toilets and showers.
- Activities: Same as those described under Clair Tappaan Lodge.
- Staff: None. Members do their own cooking and housekeeping
- Reservations and Rates: Reservation requests for the winter season
and the following year are accepted only in writing prior to October 1, whereupon all
requests on file are processed in a lottery fashion, with Sierra Club groups and
work party participants being given priority. All written requests must include a check
for 50% of the full amount of the reservation or a valid VISA or MasterCard number
including the expiration date. After October 1, requests for reservations are accepted
by phone and are processed on a first-come, first-served
basis.
From Thanksgiving through Easter the winter weekend and holiday rate is $25 per person. A two-night stay is required. Minimum $250 per night. There is an extra charge to use the electrically heated sauna. A $250 deposit is required to cover any damage or work not done by the departing group. Contact the Clair Tappaan Lodge manager
at Clair Tappan Lodge, PO Box 36, Norden, CA 95724, 530-426-3632 or 800-679-6775.
